REPORT: Canterbury RFC 1st XV 5 – 24 Ealing Trailfinders 1st XV

Ealing returned to West London following a tricky  visit to Kent, with 4 points but will be left feeling disappointed at missing out on the all important 4 try bonus point which sees them slip back to 3rd position in  National 2 South, behind Barking and Rosslyn Park, who go head to head next weekend. All three  teams are on 64 points, but Ealing have a game in hand over Rosslyn Park.

Despite the disappointment of losing top spot, Director of Rugby Mike Cudmore was happy with the overall performance, he said "It was important after not playing for a couple of weeks that we delivered the game plan well and defend with enthusiasm.  We achieved both of these requirements and put Canterbury under a lot of pressure in defence and in attack we created numerous opportunities.  We were happy with the majority of our performance against a team away who have been playing well recently"

Ealing’s fly half Ben Ward bossed the game throughout and contributed 14 points to the visitors, as their overall superiority proved too much for a determined Canterbury outfit.

Ben Ward began his own personal haul after 14 minutes with a simple penalty. Indeed Ealing continued to put width on the ball but were unable to breach the Canterbury defence. Ealing continued to dominate, their scrum and line outs were one of the most pleasing aspects of their play according to Mike Cudmore, "our scrum & line outs were some of the best we have produced all season, and we caused them numerous problems on their ball as well".

Despite this dominance Ealing were unable to add to Ward’s early penalty, until another long  line break by centre Joe Price, some quick recycling and the ball was moved onto Ward by hooker Jon Moyce, who went over under the posts on 38 minutes, Ward adding the extras to stretch Ealing’s lead to 10-0 just before the break.

Canterbury’s fly half Phil Gibson missed another opportunity to put the Kent side on the board, and it went into the third quarter when Ealing’s full back Pete Hodgkinson showed what a class player he is. The Ealing backline had stretched their opponents all day, and his two tries showed what a classy backline Ealing possess.

On 58 minutes the ball was moved left, and some exceptional off loading by skipper Jay King and prop Steve Neville  who fed the  dangerous Hodgkinson, who hit the line at pace  for the first of his brace of tries. Ward adding the 2 points.

Two minutes later Ealing pressing the Canterbury defence again, referee Paul Kimber issued the second yellow card of the day for slowing the ball down. Canterbury’s number 8 Roche was dispatched to the bin. Quick thinking from the resultant penalty by Ealing prop Sungo Kuwana, saw the ball whipped to the right for Pete Hodgkinson stroll over for his second try of the day on 61 minutes. Ward adding the conversion to make it 24-0 to the visitors.

For all their pressure, Ealing could not cross the line for that extra try that would have seen them remain at the top of National 2 South. Instead the final score of the day went to Canterbury wing Michael Melford who won a foot race to dot down on 79 minutes.

Reflecting on this tricky away win, man of the match, Ealing’s full back Pete Hodgkinson said "It was  a solid performance in the first half going in 10-0 up. It was particularly pleasing as we had the wind in our faces and Canterbury came out, as expected, firing. The pitch was in a reasonable condition despite the weather so it allowed the backs  to have a good go at theirs!  Our forwards gave us a good platform by which to attack from. made some good line breaks but we were guilty of being unable to finish off the try try scoring opportunities. We had chances to touch down right up until the final whistle but In the end we went away without a bonus point. Never the less it was  a good away win  against a potentially tricky opposition, particularly considering that we have not played for a while".

What happened away from Vallis Way this weekend?

Barking 41-3 Bridgwater & Albion

No surprise that Barking won this contest – 2 penalty tries in this 6  try demolition as Barking "look forward" to next week’s away clash at Park.

Barnes 24-29 Southend

Southend wing Andy Frost was the hero in West London, as they came away with this 4 try win over luckless Barnes.

Clifton 14-3 Westcombe Park

According to Clifton’s larger than life forwards coach, Clifton should have won by more given the amount of possession their forwards won – Don’t forwards always say that? – In the end 4 points in the bag for Clifton.

Lydney 23-29 Rosslyn Park

Another home loss for Lydney, taking it to 4 losses from 6 games, but given they spend most of the game with 14 men (after second row Bashford did just that….on 9 minutes), they ran Park close. Laidlaw forgot his kicking boots  and it took a 70 minute try and 78 min pen to take all the points for Park.

Richmond 26-15 Henley

Prop Ed Rosa was the hero of the Mond faithful with two tries to put a halt to Richmond’s recent loss of form …..

Shelford 21-17 Dings Crusaders

Dings came away with a losing bonus point as Shelford’s full back Ed Gough’s kicking proved the difference between the two teams.

Other games in N2S this weekend

Barking v Bridgwater & Albion

Amid rumours of financial problems and sponsors deserting them, Barking return to Gorsebrook to take on basement club B&A. On paper a comfortable 5 point win here for Barking.

Barnes v Southend

4th placed Southend will be too strong for Barnes. Although Southend have only won twice on the road, Barnes Elms will be a happy hunting venue for them. Away win and all 5 points.

Clifton v Westcombe Park

Interesting game. On league position Clifton should take this one, their home form is good. but I have a hunch – very painful too. Closer than expected home win, maybe Coombe to get a point as well.

Lydney v Rosslyn Park

Park on form after last week’s demolition of Richmond at the Rock. Lydney’s form against the top four teams has only produced a loosing bonus point against Clifton!  No points here for them either. Away win with all the points

Richmond v Henley Hawks

The Hawks could run Mond close – A turnaround for Henley? Maybe – Let’s go for an away win, a close one!

Shelford v Dings Crusaders

7th placed Shelford take on 8th placed Dings!! Difficult to talk about form when there has been so little rugby , but Dings don’t travel too well, unless its to Lydney! Shelford to be too strong at home in my humble opinion, they have only dropped points to Clifton and Southend. Home win, but maybe Dings come away with a bonus point.

Terry Fights for a Good Cause

Terry will climb into the ring at York Hall, Bethnall Green on 3rd June to compete against fighters from Premiership clubs such as Harlequins, London Irish and Saracens, as well as local rivals Richmond and London Scottish, in the Touraid Fight Night. An event that aims to raise much-needed cash for the charity which helps disadvantaged children to participate in sport overseas.

Here, Terry reminds us of his distinguished service to the club, and provides the lowdown on why he’s getting involved in Touraid Fight Night

Terry at Ealing

“I’ve played rugby at Ealing since the age of 15, which means I’ve been a member of the club for 27 years. I had stints playing at Osterley and Wasps but Ealing has always been my club, and in my heart.

“I’ve played for every team at Ealing at one stage or other, but my best moments were playing for the 1st XV from the age of 20, playing in National League 4 South as it was then (now National League Two South), appearing in my last 1st team game at the age of 35.

“I have enjoyed playing rugby at all levels for Ealing, taking part in five Middlesex Cup finals (winning four of them) and in my debut campaign in the 1st team I scored 30 tries, as the side notched a club record 1000-point season.

“However, my proudest moments came representing Ealing in the famous Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham, where I was fortunate to score a try on the hallowed turf, ably set up by Clive "Jive" Whitton – probably the only time he’s ever passed me the ball, thanks Clive!

The Day Job

Terry Thompson Text Wrap“During the week I work as an IT Consultant for SunGard, near Heathrow. It’s a good company to work for with a lot of nice people, hopefully some of whom will be turning up to support me in this great event, or more likely to see me get my head punched in to shut me up for a few seconds! Still, all good as long as it’s for a good cause!!

Why Fight?

“The reason I’m doing this? Well, those of you that know me are aware that apart from being a big Ealing man I am a boxing fanatic. I love to watch fights of any type and have been out to Las Vegas a couple of times to watch Ricky Hatton. My all-time sporting idol is the one and only Muhammad Ali. It’s a real thrill for me to be able to represent Ealing once again, and it’s a bonus that it’s for a very good cause.

“Being a boxing fan, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fight in front of a big crowd and hopefully here I’ll get my chance. It’s a real honour to be able to give something back to Ealing, help with this great charity and give my club some good positive press. I’ll be trying my hardest to make them proud.

The Hard Slog

“Training starts in February and it’s going to be very hard and demanding on my old body, but I’m looking forward to finding out if I’ve got what it takes. Thanks to all those guys who’ve given me support and even the ones that have just laughed at me! I’ll be doing my best to make you proud, or prove you wrong! It’s a great event and I hope you’ll all get down there to support me. Would be great to see you all there shouting my name, or booing me…whatever you feel. My great wish is to enter the ring with my now adopted (stolen) Ricky Hatton song:

There’s only one Terry Thompson
One Terry Thompson
Walking along , singing a song
Walking in a Thompson wonderland

Bring it on!!!

What happened away from Vallis Way this weekend?

Whilst the ducks were settling into life on the 1st XV pitch, 4 games did  survived the thaw in N2S.

Bridgwater & Albion 10-21 Lydney

Lydney condemn Bridgy to their 12th loss of the season, as they continue their fight for survival!

Southend 6-7 Clifton

This was never going to be a classic given the conditions! Clifton will be pleased to come away with the 4 points on a day when the weather intervened. All the scoring was done in the 2nd half as Bristol-based Clifton held on for the win.

Worthing 29-18 Barnes

Poor old Barnes ! 2010 has not started any better  them as 2009 ended. Leading 18-17 with 5 minutes to go , two Worthing tries in the last 5 minutes took the game and with it 4 league points.

Rosslyn Park 50 Richmond 8

So much for a close game!  Park were on the board within minutes of the start and never looked back. A 7 try demolition of the so called improving Mond!!!  Back to the drawing board.

PREVIEW: Ealing Trailfinders 1st XV v Barking 14th January

This weekend Ealing Rugby Club welcomes 2nd placed Barking to Vallis Way for this top of the table clash in National 2 South.

With very little rugby being played due to the weather, neither team will be happy coming into a game like this on the back of little activity. Barking’s last outing was was on the 2nd January against a determined Canterbury outfit which ran them close whilst losing 17-13. The hero that day was fly half Craig Ratford who scored 7 points to take the Goresbrook side home to a narrow victory. Meanwhile Ealing were on their way to a four try victory against Richmond, and whilst not at their best, proved too much for their West London rivals.

It will on the day boil down to experience, and previous fixtures will have no relevance to what happens this weekend.  As Director of Rugby, Mike Cudmore said ,"We are all looking forward to our return fixture against Barking this week.  The team have come a long way since our previous meeting in September and all are relishing the challenge in front of them and looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd".

Barking RFC – A Short History

It all started in 1930 as Park Modern Old Boys. Park Modern was a rugby playing school in the borough and their first headmaster, Bill Easterby, decided that there was enough interest to form a senior side. The school grounds in Rosslyn Road were used in the early years before moving to Barking Park in the 1960’s. The Club continued under the Park Modern name until 1974 when it was no longer a strictly old boys’ team and became Barking Park Rugby Club, and two years later, changed to its current name Barking RUFC.  In 1989 the Club moved to Goresbrook initially with two pitches one of which had floodlights enabling the Club to play and host evening matches.  Training facilities were improved beyond recognition from the previous facilities and lighting at the school and park.

The two most prominent players being Club President Jason Leonard-OBE (England and British & Irish Lion) and Kris Chesney (England Sevens & Toulon). Other players include Glyn Llewellyn (Wales) and John Rudd (Newcastle Flacons and England Saxons).  International Players of note who  have also played for Barking are Jeff Probyn,  John Buckton (England) Corrado Pilat (Italy), Sevanaia Rokobaro (Fiji) and Mathias Albina (Argentina).

What of the current crop of players? Well we know from our visit to Gorsebrook that coaches Alex Codling and Kevin Sorrell have put together a team that knows how to win games. There is plenty of experience in their squad, and they have taken each game one at a time.

Since the first meeting Barking have suffered financial difficulties and can no longer guarantee payments to their players.

Coach Codling feels that the shift of power may have changed as a result – "Pretty much the whole programme was wiped out at the weekend and we knew it would be by midweek" said the former England lock.

"We would rather have played, without question, because with Saturday’s game being called off, and the Lydney game before Christmas, it’s all been a bit stop-start lately. We now play Ealing, who are top by a point and it’s a big game for both sides. For us, our aim was never to win the league, but just to take every game as it comes."

However both sides are close to the summit, but the season has a long way to go, and teams like Rosslyn park and Clifton will have something to say in the destination of the league.

Fly half Craig Ratford is the guy who pulls the strings for the Eastenders, and so far he has amazed 146 points this season. Flanker James Kellard is top of the try scorers with 8 so far to his name, whilst he is followed by 3 players on 6 a piece , wings David Vincent and Nico Fraser and open side James Nagan. Lock Tim Collier tops the bad boy stakes with 3 yellow cards to his name.

If going into the game Mike Cudmore and his team are looking for a clink in the Barking armour, then their away record may offer one, they have won 5 of their 6 games, losing to Clifton 17-13 in the final minute, and have failed to collect those all important try scoring bonus points in 5 or their 6 away games so far! BUT they have still won 5 of the 6 games though.

We should expect a game of contrasting styles, the forward dominated style of Barking and the expansive style of the Vallis Way side. Skipper Jay King is looking forward to the game, he said, "Playing against teams like Barking is why we want to play at this level. Last time against Barking we made some silly errors, since then we have grown as a team and learnt a lot from it. The whole squad are ready for the challenge that lies ahead"

Games this weekend in N2S

With all the games in N2S falling foul of the weather last weekend, it’s time to look forward to next weekend!

Am not sure many more games will happen but here we go……………

Obviously the clash of the weekend will be taking place at Vallis Way where we take on second place Barking, but away from Vallis Way what is happening?

Bridgwater & Albion v Lydney

Bridgy’s seasons woes to continue as Lydney pick up a win away from home. Could be a real bog at Bridgwater though given the weather!  Not one for the rugby purist!  – Away win

Dings Crusaders v Canterbury

If this one survives the weather could be a test for Canterbury as they take on 8th placed Dings. A draw on the card? Possibly, but I take Canterbury to take away win.

Rosslyn Park v Richmond

Game of the weekend, ahh no that is taking place a Vallis Way! What will Park’s bog like pitch be like after this snap of bad weather. It wont allow for running rugby will it? Mond are improving but I will go for a close home win.

Southend v Clifton

4th v 5th. Again if the snow clears this could be a cracker of a game , but with European action taking place will Clifton be a full strength? A home win given this and the heavy conditions.

Westcombe Park v Shelford

Shelford don’t travel well, and I think Coombe will prove too strong this time. Home win

Worthing v Barnes

Weather again a big factor if this goes ahead. If it does more misery for Barnes. Home win

An Evening with Wayne Barnes, International Referee, 2009

Wayne Barnes, the International Referee, will be attending Ealing Rugby Club on February 10th, three days before the France v Ireland match, to share with us his interpretation of the new application of the laws at the breakdown.  The floor will then be open for any questions on any refereeing topic.  The evening will commence at 7.30 pm with the presentation commencing at 7.45 pm.  We would love to show Wayne a great Ealing welcome so PLEASE attend.

This evening is for referees and coaches – and anyone else interested in the interpretation of the breakdown laws or simply hearing Wayne speak.  He is very knowledgeable and an excellent speaker so please come along.  Put this date in your diary.  The presentation will include practical demonstrations, so volunteers will be required to be bodies on the floor of the clubhouse.

For those referees who wish to aspire to greater things, Wayne will be training at the club from 6.30 pm and would be happy if any of you wanted to join him.  This will last for approximately one hour.  It should be a very revealing exercise.  Any of you who are serious about making progress should make every effort to join in.

Other N2S fixtures this weekend

Well all of this may be slightly optimistic given the weather forecast, but here we go…………

Barking v Dings Crusaders

Form suggests that Dings will come off second best , with only 1 win and a draw from their travels this season – HOME win, but hopefully the Barking bandwagon will creak!

Barnes v Henley

Barnes desperately need a win. No form to speak off from their previous 6 games, 1 win against local  rivals Richmond and that was away! No wins at home but some close losses. Henley have won 2 or their last 3 games, but they were at home. On the road they have only produced 1 win at Canterbury. Away win in my opinion with something to spare as the Hawks enter 2010 with a bang!

Clifton v Worthing

Clifton’s home record is impressive , the only points dropped were against Dings in the mud in early December – Too far too early for Worthing – Home win with all 5 points.

Richmond v Bridgwater & Albion

Richmond impressed in their loss to us…..They are now trying to play rugby and will be too strong for basement club Bridgy!  Home win with a nice bonus point as well!

Shelford v Canterbury

Interesting fixture , 6th v 7th! Canterbury took Barking close last week, and on the road they have won their last 2 games. Shelford have only suffered one loss at home this season against Clifton, 19-21. I will go for a close home win , but the Kent side to get a losing bonus point.

Westcombe Park v Southend

A local derby to start 2010! Southend are sitting in 4th whilst their rivals are in unlucky 13th!  A close 19-6 win for Southend in the previous encounter. Combes form has been poor, one win in their previous 6 games, but they have run teams close – Away win but again a close game.
