What happened away from Vallis Way this weekend?

Clifton 34-10 Bridgwater & Albion

A game of two halves, B&A leading 7-10 at half time, saw 2 yellow cards prove the difference as Clifton took full advantage with two tries….They never got back into the game and Clifton eased to asix try win.

Lydney 16-35 Barking

Those expecting Barking to crumble can think again or can they? Lydney were leading 16-12 until captain & prop Paul Price was shown his second yellow card of the day on 61 minutes. Barking took advantage and scored four unanswered tries to keep the pressure up on us & Park.

Richmond 27-18 Canterbury

Somehow Richmond held onto victory despite having two yellow cards!  Leading 14-10 at half time. Injuries to both Canterbury flankers combined with a number of errors were costly as they threw away a losing bonus point that sees Mond pick up an unexpected victory.

Southend 33-10 Henley

No real surprises here as Henley’s season lurches into a mire…. They were hoping for a top five finish, now survival is on the cards. Southend take all the points with this five try victory

Westcombe Park 3-75 Rosslyn Park

Park keep the pressure up with this 13 try demolition of Combe……

Worthing 38-14 Shelford

Worthing’s form continues to improve, five wins from the last six games. A six try home victory over Shelford takes all the points.

REPORT: Barnes 8 – 73 Ealing Trailfinders 1st XV

Bright winter sunshine greeted Ealing Trailfinders as they took the short trip to Barnes Elms on the first 6 Nations weekend of the season. They came away with an 11 try victory that will do nothing to help their host’s fight for their National League 2 survival.

Away from Barnes Elms, Rosslyn Park remained in 2nd place with a 75-3 victory away at Westcombe Park, whilst Barking had to come back from behind to beat 14 man Lydney 35-16. The gap at the top of National 2 South is tight, with Ealing on 74 points, Park on 73 and Barking on 70. Ealing have a game in hand over Rosslyn Park.

Ealing number 8 Guthrie Hall reflected on the days game and said afterwards, "As a squad we have set ourselves high standards that we know we can achieve but our ambition is to improve on those standards each week. This mentality and work ethic is shown in our performance on the weekend. Although there is a lot of competition at the top of the table, our emphasis is on focusing on each game as it comes, enjoying what we do, and working hard on our game in training. It’s the same approach we started the season off with and I think it has been the key to what we have achieved so far in the season. We came here to win and get the league points on offer, anything else is a bonus. To grab a couple myself is always nice though!”

Ealing were on the scoreboard within four minutes after scrum half Paddy Gill changed the direction of play allowing centre Marcus Burcham to cross for the opening try,  Ben Ward adding the first of his nine successful conversions of the day. Barnes were on the scoreboard three minutes later, when Ealing were caught off side. Warren Gower stepping up to convert the penalty.

Ealing Trailfinders then started to up the pace of the game, and blindside flanker Blair Morris crossed for two tries in as many minutes as Barnes felt the full force of Ealing’s attack. Ward converted both tries to leave the score 21-3 to the visitors after just 13 minutes on the clock. The try of the first period went to prop Dinos Alexopoulos, on 17 minutes, who appearing at inside centre throw a dummy to cross the line unopposed to claim the 4 try bonus point. Ward adding the 2 points. Joe Price crossed for the fifth try of the half on 30 minutes, leaving the half time score 35-3.

The second half began in the same vein, as number 8 Guthrie Hall powered over from a scrum under the posts for his first of the afternoon on 42 minutes. Ward again adding the conversion.  Wing Richard Briggs got on the score sheet after a neat chip by Marcus Burcham saw Briggs win the foot race to touch down on 45 minutes. On 61 minutes Hall claimed his second of the day. On 67 minutes the hosts scored out wide after a good flowing move saw Nick Kurcham cross the line.

Ealing didn’t let up. Replacement centre Liam Lonergan, first crossed for his try, followed by Owen Bruynseels, before Lonergan, breaking from Ealing’s own 10 yard line, beat several defenders to find Dave Essien in support and he sent the flanker over for the final try on 80 minutes.

Ealing’s fly half Ben Ward added,  "We were looking for an 80 minute performance and got one. The set piece was very good and this lay the foundation to put guys into space. The guys off the bench also made a good impact when they came on"

This weekend, Ealing travel to Cambridgeshire to face 8th placed Shelford RFC. Kick off is 2.30pm – http://www.shelfordrugby.co.uk/

REPORT: Ealing Exiles 17 – 17 Former Exiles

On a pleasantly warm and sunny International afternoon the Exiles took to the first team pitch still looking for just their third win of the season, against a past Exiles side.

Barry had decided strategically to keep both teams drinking in O’Neill’s until 3am but this did not distract from the expansive rugby both sides tried to play.  The crowd were not disappointed and anyone watching would have thought it was more like a game of sevens.

The scoring was opened by Alex K who showed his pace to make a great try which he duly converted himself.  Lawrence was solid in midfield defence and scored an excellent individual try just before half time.

The Exiles took the opportunity to bring Noel ‘Junior’ off the bench for his first game at hooker.  He took 100% of his ball and it was good to see the Exiles continuing to bring on new front row players.

Mention must go to young Tom L and Fabio who in the true spirit of the Exiles played three matches in three days.  Thanks also to referee Mark Lynch who, after a short spell at Wasps has now returned to the club, and managed the game unobtrusively.

The final score meant the Exiles are still looking for a win in 2010, but a fine display of free running rugby (and beer) was on display.  The game ended in a draw, 17 points apiece.

REPORT: Ealing Evergreens 31 – 3 Denia (Spain)

Good result on Friday night, a solid five tries to none win against a game but limited Spanish side.

Good tries by BOF, Jamie, Stef and a brace by the jug-avoiding Jacko.  Two conversions by Andy Cleary and one from Bryn made the score 31 – 3 at the end.  Bryn should have had a try himself but lost possession when performing a James Haskell-esque leap over the line!

Obviously Friday night games are popular as shown by 24 players being available.  Maybe we should look into having another Friday night game in April after the league is finished?

But back to the Surrey Vets league this Saturday where we are currently in second position.  We have a crucial game this weekend at home against Rosslyn Park Vets with a  2pm kick off so please reply with your availability for that.

Thanks
Declan

Other games in N2S this weekend

Clifton v Bridgwater & Albion

This should be an easy win for 4th placed Clifton, but Bridgy almost shocked Canterbury last weekend. This may be one step too far. A home win with all the points to Clifton. Bridgy come away empty handed.

Lydney v Barking

Lydney ran Park close last time out, can they do the same to Barking? Barking on the back of the narrow loss v Park last week. Have a feeling that Lydney could pull something out of the bag – narrow home win!

Richmond v Canterbury

Richmond have to start winning games, and this will be a hard one for them to collect something from. Away win

Southend v Henley

Henley will struggle to get something from this . Home win

Westcombe Park v Rosslyn Park

Park travel to Goddington Dean fresh on the heals of beating Barking – Will it be the Lord Mayor’s procession? Park to win, a bonus point maybe for Combe?

Worthing v Shelford

Worthing after their 45-3 win over Richmond will look to continue this form. Home win, Shelford don’t travel well!

What happened away from Vallis Way this weekend?

Bridgwater & Albion 23-25 Canterbury

Bridgy almost pulled a shock win out of the fire – Not sure a losing bonus point will save them though – shame!

Clifton 27-18 Shelford

Shelford’s poor form continues as 5 try Clifton hold onto 4th spot.

Rosslyn Park 11-10 Barking

A game of missed opportunities for both sides, as their reliable kickers forget their boots!  Barking’s young standoff misses a late opportunity to win the game for the Goresbrook side in a result that sees Park take 2nd spot.

Westcombe Park 19-20 Barnes

A welcome win for our friends from Barnes Elm’s whom we visit next week as Barnes hold onto take 4 valuable points

Worthing 45-3 Richmond

Oh dear…… Richmond’s pack was dismantled in this trip to the seaside – a 7 try demolition means they are 1 from 4 in 2010….

Henley v Lydney

Postponed

REPORT: Ealing Trailfinders 37 – 28 Dings Crusaders

Ealing Trailfinders won this tight contest at Vallis Way, the win leapfrogging them above fellow promotion chasers Barking and Rosslyn Park, who ground out an 11-10 win at Roehampton.

The game was of added significance as it marked the 100th game for Ealing’s skipper Jay King. He will be relieved that his side took the win against a  determined Dings side.

Captain, Jay King. 100 games for Ealing

Jay added " It was great to celebrate my 100th league appearance at home and all the more special to celebrate it with a win that takes us top of the league. Dings certainly threw the kitchen sink at us. They will definately be disappointed not to have taken anything out of the game. "

"Today we weren’t on top form.  Defensively we were disappointing. In many aspects we did not perform as well as we should have, but to get a 5 point win has be to pleasing. We will certainly be looking to improve this week. "

Ealing were pushed all the way by Dings, and statistics say they don’t travel well – never believe an accountant !

Dings tore into Ealing from the start , but some strong Ealing defence kept Dings from their line. Dings’ wing, Jack Tovey took an early penalty to take the visitors into a 4th minute, 3-0 lead. The lead was not to last for long as Ealing full back Pete Hodgkinson showing his pace and  taking his opposite man on the outside, he scored in the corner on 11 minutes. Tovey responded with another penalty for Ealing being adjusted offside on 19 minutes.

Again Ealing came back, as they began playing some impressive  phase rugby, hooker Jon Moyce making some huge in roads into the visitors defence and this helped to open the Dings defence up to send wing Owen Bruynseels over for his 5th try of the season on 21 minutes. Ben Ward added the two pints to extend their lead to 12-6. Ealing began to turn the screw as Bruynseels fellow wing Richard Briggs, making his full debut for the Vallis Way team, crossed for the first of his brace on  24 minutes. Ward again added the conversion.

Dings struck back with skipper Stern Williams on 28 minutes, following a break by the Dings scrum half Steve Plummer. Tovey added the extras to bring Dings back into the game at 19-13. On 35 minutes Ward added a penalty as Dings’ defence transgressed as the home side began to go after the 4th try bonus point. Following a lineout on the Ealing 22 , Dings’ hooker was at the back of a rolling maul, and he touched down with Tovey again adding the conversion to bring them 22-20.

It was Ealing’s full back Hodgkinson who calmed the home side’s nerves as he again showed his class, again taking the opposition on the outside to cross for the second on 38 minutes for the home sides 4th try and with it a well earned bonus point .  Ward adding to his own haul with the two points to take Ealing into a deserved, if somewhat closer than they would have liked 29-20 half time lead.

Director of Rugby Mike Cudmore said at half time "We had  scored four tries and secured a bonus point by half time and before the game we would have accepted it and been happy, but our display was not of the standard we look for ".

The second half was a tight affair, and one that was slightly error strewn, and it was the visitors who struck first following a break and pass inside, the Dings’ wing Tovey crossed on 49 minutes, but he was unable to add to his tally and the wide conversion went wide of the mark.

Richard Briggs added to his first half try on 68 minutes, as the Vallis Way side broke out from their own 22, Briggs beating two men before cutting inside to dot down in the left corner. Ward narrowly missing the extra points. Ward put the nail in the Dings coffin with a well struck 75th minute penalty to extend the home sides lead to 37-28 and with it all 5 league points on offer.

Richard Briggs scores the final try to secure the victory

Despite the win, Mike Cudmore will be looking at the negatives as his team seek to build on their position, as they next week travel to Barnes Elms to take on Barnes in the rearranged league fixture. Last week Barnes took the scalp of Westcombe park in a close game at Goddington Dean : 19-20. Mike added , " Both the players and coaches were disappointed with the overall performance and I will be looking for a positive response in training this week and against Barnes away this weekend"

Ealing team – 15 – Pete Hodgkinson 14 – Owen Bruynseels 13 – Markus Burcham 12 – Joe Price 11 – Richard Briggs 10 – Ben Ward 9 – Paddy Gill 8 – Guthrie Hall 7 – Jay King (C) 6 – Blair Morris 5 – James Winterbottom 4 – Gethin Jenkins 3 – Dinos Alexopoulous 2 – Jon Moyce 1 – Steve Neville

Reps.  16 – Sungo Kuwana 17 – Lewis Brown 18 – Stuart Ware  19 – Luke Wallace  20 – Morgan Thompson

Next Weekend, Ealing travel to 14th placed Barnes for their rearranged league game. Kick off is 2pm  www.barnesrfc.org

Other games in N2S this weekend

Bridgwater & Albion v Canterbury

Canterbury to be too strong on the road, 3  wins and 3 losses from their 7 games on the road. It’s starting to look very grim for Bridgwater – Away win with all 5 points.

Clifton v Shelford

Clifton too strong at Station Road, Shelford don’t travel well. Home win but Shelford may get something out of the game.

Henley v Lydney

12th play 10th – Could be a close game, think Henley to win a close game, Lydney travel back with a losing bonus point.

Rosslyn Park v Barking

A nice low score draw would be nice!! Barking’s one loss this season has been on the road at Clifton, and they have creaked on the road on other occasions… Can park may them break?  I think so … Home win

Westcombe Park v Barnes

Barnes will struggle to get anything out of their visit to Goddington Dean – Home win

Worthing v Richmond

9th v 11th this time – Mond made us work hard for our win and then tamely rolled over v Park – Which one will Worthing get?  Close home win, Mond to get a point out of their trip to the south coast.

PREVIEW: 1st XV v Dings Crusaders RFC 1st XV Saturday 30th January

Following the trip to the Garden of England that is Kent and the victory over Canterbury, Ealing Trailfinders return to Vallis Way this weekend, to take on Dings Crusaders.

As can be seen by our previous results against Dings, our trips to Landseer Avenue have not always come out in our favour! One positive thing is that they have never won at Vallis Way, something that won’t worry the squad, as they treat every game as it comes.

Ealing Trailfinders lock James Winterbottom is aware of the threat that Dings bring,  "Our result against Canterbury last weekend, was really pleasing. To go away from home and perform well after almost a month of postponed matches says a lot about the focus we have as a squad. However we need to take another step forward this weekend. Dings are a very physical team and we will need to be at our very best to beat them. With Park and Barking playing each other this weekend a home win for us will ensure we remain in contention for promotion and put pressure on those around us."

The History of Dings Crusaders Rugby Football Club – In the beginning

The "Dings" was a notorious slum area in Bristol between Temple Meads and Barton Hill (it provided many of the most enthusiastic rioters in the Bristol riots of 1831). The Shaftsbury Crusade was a Christian Mission in the Dings, and encouraged sporting activities. In 1897 H W Rudge founded and established the Dings Crusaders as a part of the Dings Boys Club, one of the activities of the Shaftesbury Crusade, he was the original driving force behind the club and acted as secretary for about 30 years and then went on to be President.

As well as our own club Dings Crusaders RFC there was also another club called Dings RFC that was founded in 1895, and to confuse things further we both played in the same colours – blue and white.

Whilst Dings RFC played their games on the field at St Phillips Marsh called the Yearlings just across the Avon from Arnos Castle. Dings Crusaders played far away on the Downs. Ultimately Dings Crusaders survived and Dings did not. It is possible that the two clubs joined forces. Of the sixteen clubs that formed the original Combination in 1901. Dings Crusaders and Saracens are the only clubs to have run continually and are still playing today.

The first recorded club game was played on October 1st 1898 against Elton St Michael’s which we lost 5-15; the next fixture with St Mary’s against whom we have played every season since then, and who were the only team to draw with them when they were unbeaten during the season before the last war.

Dings in 2010

Dings currently lie in 8th position having won 5, drawn 2 and lost 9 of their 16 games played so far. Their away form is the Achilles heal, having only once away from Landseer Avenue,  drawn one and lost on 5 occasions.

Although fly half Adam Westall tops the Dings points scoring list with 65, he has been missing in the past few games. Top of the try scoring list is wing George Watkins on 7, followed by Orlando Scott and Gavin Curry on 5 each. Open side flanker Stern Williams tops the unwanted mantle of receiving 3 yellow cards of the 11 Dings have got!

Dings form going into this encounter has been patchy, 2 wins from their last 6 games, a loosing bonus point at Shelford last week, was preceded by a home loss to our hosts of last week, Canterbury . Their away form as with many sides has been their problem, 1 win and 1 draw their return from their trips on the road from their 7 games.

Director of Rugby, Mike Cudmore, will be looking to build on what he saw as a positive performance,"We will be looking to build on last weeks performance against Canterbury. Although we played well last week there were areas in our game that we need to improve on and we will be working on this in training.  When you play Dings the games are always a very competitive and the team know what is required for them and what they need to deliver"
