PREVIEW: Southend RFC 1st XV v Ealing Trailfinders 1st XV

On the road again! This time round the M25 to Southend RFC.

Last weekend saw a close, hard fought victory against an improving Richmond side, by 15 points to 13, Director of Rugby Mike Cudmore said after the game "Richmond came with a specific game plan and we did not problem solve well enough throughout the game.  There were various areas that were well below our performance standards and we will work hard in training this week to ensure these are sorted out before our tough away game at Southend.  We did not play well but still managed a win".

This weekend, Ealing will have to step up the pace when they travel East to visit table toppers Southend, it what many have described as the match of the day in National 2 South, between two of the early favourites for the league title. Maybe a little early for that "title", but with a 35-22 win over the Mond to start with followed by a 53-10 wiping away at new boys Hinckley, they will quite rightly be confident as they take on Ealing at their Leicester Road ground.

Skipper Ben Ward said "Southend have been the form side so far in the league. They have a good set of backs and some powerful forwards. However, so do we. We are very much looking forward to going to their place and testing ourselves. It’s games like this where not much needs to be said to get the guys up for it. We know we will have to be at our best to come away with the points but its a challenge that all of us are very much looking forward. The game should be good to watch with two teams who enjoy running rugby."

Ealing will travel to Southend also in confident mood. A fully fit squad and boosted by two wins to their name so far. They were tested by Richmond last week, and have worked hard on the training paddock this week.

Head coach Kieran Power, despite the below par performance said "Richmond came and defended very well and spoiled a lot of our possession, which we didn’t react well to. This week coming we need to rise above the sort of spoiling games and make sure that the possession we do have is looked after well and used to its optimum for us to be able to each our full potential".

A short history of Southend RFC

Southend Rugby Club has a long and proud history dating back to 1870 a year before the Rugby Football Union itself. In that year Admiral Charles Barstow Theobald gave a set of ‘By-laws and rules’ to lads playing football at the local Milton Hall sports ground. So the club was formed.

It was called ‘Southend Foot Ball Club’ and one feels an affinity with those Victorian lads when reading their rules and noting similarities with today’s laws such as Rule 4: A player entering a ‘squash’ on the wrong side is off side. First newspaper reports began to appear in 1878 and early opponents were another Essex side Ilford Wanderers. One reports notes "the pack did not get low enough down, thus wasting weight and allowing the visitors to screw and carry the ball with them". Who says the game has moved on? A young player of the period Jimmy Cotgrove reported that, "we trained with Paper Chases", no wonder the scrummaging technique was not up to much.

During the1978/79 season the club moved to it’s current ground at Warners Park and a brand new purpose built clubhouse. A grandstand, physio room, gym and shop have been added since. The move saw Southend enter one of its most successful playing eras. The following decade saw the Eastern Counties cup won on three occasions and the Essex Cup lifted four times. In addition Blackheath (10-14) and Rob Andrew’s Nottingham (12-25) were both run close in the John Player cup. 1980 saw the club play one of its most famous games in the televised cup match at home to Gloucester.

The visitors sported an awesome reputation and six current or future internationals in their pack. Leading in the last quarter Southend just went down 6-12 but confirmed their position as one of the strongest sides in Eastern Counties at the time.

The formation of leagues saw Southend placed in National League Four South. Memories of great wins against sides such as Redruth and Lydney remain from this period but from the mid nineties playing strength diminished and results suffered. Whilst team spirit remained strong relegation and league restructuring saw the club tumble to London North East Three as the new millennium dawned.

However the dawn broke brightly. The appointment of former fly half Kevin Harman as Coach and James Shearing as Captain backed by a playing focused committee saw the fortunes of the club once again on the up. Much hard work, a new ambition, discipline and approach has spring boarded successive promotions back into London Division One. That same season Southend went on to win London One and in the season 2003-04 saw the club back in the National Leagues again. Playing in the National 3 South the First IV came a very creditable 6th and won the inaugural Essex Senior Cup.

Since then, Southend have maintained National League status and are currently playing in National 2 South under the guidance of the Director of Rugby Ben Green. I wonder whether Admiral Theobald knew what he was starting one hundred and thirty six years ago. The members of Southend Rugby Football Club past and present owe him a debt of gratitude and raise a pint in his honour, as we look back with pride and forward with excitement to the rugby challenges ahead.

Southend in 2010?

Southend have started 2010 with a bang. They recruited well on the back of a successful end to last season where they ended in 4th place and caused all the top sides problems.

Full back cum wing Andy Frost is starting his season as he finished last, with 38 points to his name so far (after last seasons 212), whilst Frost, Mark Billings and Chris Vaughan have 2 tries apiece to their names. Prop Mark Williams is their only name to have been put on rugby’s naughty step for 10 minutes!

Ealing’s open side Jay King commented after training Thursday, "We know that we were not at our best last week. Richmond came with a game plan in mind to defend and they did it well.  However we have looked at ourselves and you don’t become a bad team overnight, we have confidence in our own ability, and the game plan we want to play. Southend ended last season well and will present a different problem this weekend. We are up for it, as I am sure they are".

Our 140th Season – From our Chairman

A message to all friends of Ealing Trailfinders from our Chairman, Mike Stiff.

Our 140th season is well underway and it is great  to see so many of you back at Vallis Way. I am sure you would all like to join me in welcoming all the new members who have joined Ealing Trailfinders in the past few weeks

As you will have seen there has been a lot of investment in some physical changes at the Club, the new Officials Stand, fencing with lovely new sponsors signage and grandstand WCs, but also drainage has been improved on between pitches 1 and 2 and a lot of reseeding and pitch preparation carried out on 3 and 4.  We are also hoping that work will commence on installing the Floodlights for the main pitch.  We must thank Trailfinders for continuing to invest in the exceptional facilities we enjoy at Vallis Way.

This season also sees major investment in our Junior Section with the Pumas section(16-19’s) being launched and the appointment of our very own Community Rugby Coach, Craig Bowley, who will be taking our game into very many more schools and colleges locally and helping promote Ealing Trailfinders across west London.  Our new format Summer Rugby Camps were a huge success exceeding our expectations and I am pleased to say these will continue with the next Camp being held during the autumn half term.

Our On-line registration system is in its final testing Phase and will be launched soon.

Flair and Fire, the history of Ealing Rugby Clubs first 140 years is being launched this autumn.

New strip for the whole Club, and other great merchandise for supporters and coaches is now available from the shop.

Our first team has been strengthened and has won its first two games. We had a very good turnout for the Richmond game and I am pleased to say that all three of our teams won their matches. I hope to see similar turnouts for the other 14 home games and that we can encourage more of you to travel to more of the away games.

There have been some changes in the make up the Executive Committee. Now that I am Chairman, Izabella Grzyb has taken on the Minis Chair,  Alex Kruczkowski has been appointed to the Executive to ensure that we focus on developing our Senior Amateur Rugby. Our new treasurer, Stuart Thomson has been at the helm for three months now and overseen a very solid start to our financial year. I am delighted with the contribution from the new non-executive directors who are already helping tremendously with the running of the Club’s disparate needs.

Our senior Chairman, David Steene, has decided to call it day after 5 years in post. Very few of you will realise just how much work Dave has put in week in and week out over the years, organising the Seniors (no small task for a National League Club), all his Executive duties, budgeting and that’s before he pulls on the kit to Coach and play for Ealing.  His club spirit is an example to us all.

Finally, I want the Executive Committee to be more open and engaged with the membership, we are always willing to discuss any ideas or issues you the members may have, there was a good discussion at the summer AGM.  I want to offer you the chance to meet us and representatives from TFSC, so that we can update you in more detail on progress and plans for this season, and you can raise any issues and ask questions.

To this end there will be a Members Forum on the 7th October at 19.00 hours at the Clubhouse.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Mike

PREVIEW: N2S fixtures this weekend

Last week in N2S

Clifton 15-14 Dings Crusaders

After their 83-0 demolition of Newbury the previous week, Dings came down with a bump in this local derby. A close game all the way through until a penalty by Clifton stand off Chris Ashwin proved the difference between the two sides.

Hinckley 10-53 Southend

Table toppers Southend took only 4 minutes to cross new boys to N2S Hinckley’s line, and it was pretty much one way traffic all day. Full back Andy Frost contributing 23 points in their 7 try victory

Jersey 21-10 Worthing

2 tries from open side Steve O’Brian helped Jersey to this hard fought victory. Worthing were denied a try at  the death as they looked to salvage a losing bonus point, but Jersey will be a hard place for anyone to get a result .

Newbury 18-43 Henley

Hawks’ full back James Combden contributed 13 points and centre Danny Wells 2 tries as Henley continued their impressive start to the season and condemned Newbury to 2 losses from 2

Old Albanians 39-23 Shelford

OA’s maintained their unbeaten start to live in N2S. Overturning a deficit of 13 points, OA’s second half display was the difference on the day. Two tries from wing Chris May contributed to a 39-23 win over win-less Shelford.

Taunton 30-19 Lydney

Lydney’s game was effectively over at half time, 24-5 down, there was no way back for the Forest of Dean side. Taunton recording their first win in N2S.

Westcombe Park 12-29 Canterbury

Local derby time at Goddington Dene, and Canterbury maintain the unbeaten start to the season. 2 tries for wing Michael Medford sealed the win by half time, ( 9-24)  and with it the 4 try bonus point as well.

This weekend in N2S

Only 6 unbeaten teams, and 4 of them play against each other. – Probably the pick of the weekend’s games will be our visit to Southend as last years 4th plays 3rd!

Canterbury v Jersey

Despite Jersey’s close opening day win on the road, I think they will find  Merton Lane  a more difficult venue to win at. A close win , but the city side to come out on top . Home win by 10

Dings Crusaders v Westcombe Park

Combe may come away empty handed from their visit to Bristol.  Home  win by 20

Henley Hawks v Clifton

Hawks have started the season at a canter – Could it be Clifton’s backs v Hawks pack? Henley too good on this occasion and a win by 12 points.

Lydney v Newbury Blues

The Blues will be targeting this game as they look to kick start their season. Lydney better than their 2 results. A close home win by 8 points

Richmond v Taunton

Richmond played well on their visit to Vallis Way last week. They may be further tested by the Taunton pack, but should pull through by 10 points

Shelford v Hinckley

Another game that newcomers Hinckley will be targeting to get their season kick started. If Shelford click, it could be a long day for the Midlanders. Home win by 15

Worthing v Old Albanians

Another tight game as OA’s take their unbeaten record on the road. Home advantage to edge it. Raiders by 7

Southend v Ealing Trailfinders

Game of the day?  Maybe. Too early to take about league winners, but it’s always nice to win all your games in September! Have Southend been tested? Can we played as poorly as we did last week?  The answer to both questions is no. A tight game none the less, those who make the fewest mistakes will win the day . An away win by 7

Evergreens and Exiles match news

The Evergreens fixture against Barnes has been postponed until 6 November.  The Exiles match against London French II has been switched to a home fixture.

REPORT: Ealing Trailfinders 15 – 13 Richmond FC

Ealing Trailfinders came away with four league points in this bruising encounter with local rivals Richmond at Vallis Way, coming out on top in a close 15-13 game,  following wins for Ealing’s two other teams involved in encounters with Richmond.

Ealing captain Ben Ward was well aware that the team fell well below the standards that they usually expect.  "We expected a tough game , and we were not surprised at how strong Richmond were. They have recruited well over the pre season and came with the plan to defend us off the pitch.  We made too many errors , which is something we will work on over the week ahead of the Southend game. Both kickers were not at their best, but when we had quality ball we were able to play with some pace, just the way we like to play the game".

The clubs veterans side, the Evergreens, produced a 10-3 win over their counterparts, Richmond Heavies, to record their first win in 4 seasons, followed by a comprehensive win for Ealing’s 2nd XV 42-26 in their league fixture.

Ealing’s 2nd XV coach, Corne Du Rand commented after his teams win, "the lads really stuck to the game plan on the narrow pitch and came away with a pleasing result, but we know there is a lot to work on regarding our game plan if we want to win our league ".

So onto the main course of the day, the National 2 South fixture between the clubs two 1st XVs. Although the season was only a week old, both teams were keen to come out of the blocks strongly.

Following a minutes silence in memory of departed friends, ex Club President Damian Bugeja and 1st XV prop Steve Keen, Ealing started brightly applying pressure which lead to referee Richard Philips penalising Richmond on 13 minutes, after their forwards went over the top at a ruck, allowing Neil Hallet to open his account with a well struck penalty. Indeed Mr Philips continued to penalise both sides at the breakdown, and Luke Cousins equalised for the visitors on 17 minutes.

On 24 minutes, a line break by the strong running Markus Burcham saw the ball transferred through several pairs of hands to wing Phil Chesters who cantered over for his 5th try of a two game old season. Neil Hallet stricking a lovely conversion from the left hand touchline to make it 10-3.

That was the final score of the half with both sides applying pressure, and in the final moment of the half Ealing were reduced to 14 men as referee Mr Philips adjust that lock James Winterbottom had handled at the ruck, and so ending his part in the game. He was replaced after half time by Gethin Davies.

Richmond took almost immediate advantage of the numbers, but Luke Cousins playing a dual role of hero and villain, tried to play the ball into the wide channel on the Ealing 22m line. An overlap looked on, but they didn’t expect Ealing’s fullback Pete Hodgkinson, who picked off the pass and set off on a 75m foot race to score on the right of the Richmond posts on 43 minutes take the score to 15-3, Hallet’s conversion just shaving the posts.

Cousins showed his metal and responded to the mistake. He calmly struck over a penalty on 46 minutes to reduce the deficit. By now Ealing had restored the numerical deficit, and despite Richmond enjoying their best period of the game in terms of territory, Ealing defence was holding firm.

It was Luke Cousins again who was looking to spoil the party for Ealing, when on 67 minutes he found a gap in the Ealing defence and went under the posts, adding the conversion to bring the score to 15-13 to the hosts.

Cousins did have a final chance with a long range penalty to take the win, but it drifted wide and with it so did Richmond’s hopes. Ealing cleared their lines and Mr Philips bought an end to the days proceedings.

Ealing Director of Rugby, Mike Cudmore was in reflective mood after what was a hard home win, "Richmond came with a specific game plan and we did not problem solve well enough throughout the game.  There were various areas that were well below our performance standards and we will work hard in training this week to ensure these are sorted out before our tough away game at Southend.  We did not play well but still managed a win"

Club President Brendan Kelly presented the man of  the match award to Ealing’s number 8 Lee Starling.

Lee said of the game, "I guess that despite the closness of the scoreline, we may well look back on this game later in the season as four points won rather than one point lost. Richmond will be up there come the end of the season. They set their stall out early on and we took a while to overcome them. We played some decent phases and when we got behind them we looked dangerous. Southend will be another test this week, and one we will all look forwad to"

Next weekend Ealing visit the early pace setters in National 2 South, Southend, as both teams who are unbeaten after two games, lock horns. Kick off is 3pm.

Other fixtures: Ealing’s 2nd XV also take on Southend, whilst the Cougars are away at Civil Service 2nd XV . The Exiles take on London French whilst the Evergreens take on Barnes Vets in the only game of the day at Vallis Way .

The 2010/2011 Season for the Referee Section

Welcome to the 2010/2011 Season. We aim to build on the success of last season with the delivery of new referees and the continuing development of existing referees to provide a high standard of game management to our players, coaches and their supporters.

We will be holding monthly meetings which will include at least two CRDA sessions,  two visits by our very own local International Referees – Wayne Barnes and Andrew Small, and other practical training events to be arranged. Do please make the best of these events.

The next stage in our development is the Referee Academy and our intention  is to offer training up to senior level. We have a lot of experience in the club and we have been able to draw on that to provide coaching and mentoring opportunities for all referees who want to referee 15-a-side rugby. We have equipment which will allow us to listen to and record a referee during a game and then to discuss the game afterwards and provide feedback. Although there is absolutely no obligation on anyone to become a London Society member we are committed to developing referees to that level so they can referee any youth game at the club up to colts level. Referees at this level are normally by society appointment.

Pete Paterson will be continuing this year as Chairman. Charlie Hodder will help run the section. MC Tsang will continue as training officer and RFU interface. Marek Kostka will be finding and allocating referees for HML matches as well as finding games for trainee referees. Tim Harrison will be recruiting 4th Officials for 1st Team home fixtures.

This is your Referee Section. It is unique in English rugby in that it is the first of its kind and has raised the bar to a very high level. It has been recognised by the RFU with the President’s Award and it has provided us with unusual access to the corridors of the RFU. Treasure it! Referees from this club have a reputation for being both even handed and good game managers. Let’s keep it going. Be involved!

Pete Paterson

Presentations by International Referees

The Referee Section is delighted to announce that our local International Referees will be delivering presentations at Ealing Rugby Club on the following dates:

Oct 19th                Wayne Barnes, International Referee    “The Season So Far”

Nov 16th               Andrew Small, International Referee      “TBA”

The evenings will start at 7.45. These events are always very interesting. Not only will Wayne and Andrew provide superb insights into refereeing at the highest level, but they will also answer many questions about refereeing games at the levels we manage on a weekly basis.

The evenings are aimed at referee development, but coaches, players and others who are interested in the intepretations of the Laws will find the evenings illuminating. We are very lucky indeed to be able to welcome such high profile referees at Ealing so please attend and provide them with a very warm welcome.

REPORT: Ealing Evergreens 36 – 7 Southgate II

Evergreens off to a winning start to the season again.  Captain Declan Cronin reports.

Evergreens off to a winning start to the season again but it was a rather facile win to be honest.  Southgate showed up with 11 players so we gave them three (and thanks very much to all who agreed to help them out) which became five in the second half!  Scrums went uncontested at the second attempt as their hooker managed to stand on the tighthead’s Achilles and put him out of the game!  Pity, because we would definitely have dominated there.

The first half was basically all Evergreens with yours truly flopping over the line from all of six inches for the opening score after a series of good forward drives.  Then a good clean line-out saw the ball spread wide and a lovely miss move in the centres had Eoghan O’Sullivan going under the posts without a hand laid on him.  I found myself loitering among the backs and got on the end of a nice flowing move to score a second time.  Big Jonny Harrison finished the first half scoring with a barn-storming run through their defence with their scrum-half clinging on limpet-like to his 22-stone frame!  Inevitably there was a little easing off in the second half which was not good with a a big game coming up and we were all guilty of lack of concentration at times or wrong options… speaking of which, one of the most glaring was where I ignored the big Scouse lad screaming for the ball on my inside and decided to take on half the Southgate defence on my own.  Unsurprisingly I was held up over the line but from the ensuing scrum Ricky attacked the blind side and, cool as a cucumber, placed the ball down just on the line.

We must have started to feel sorry for them then because when they kicked long to find Stef Glancy on the wing (yes, Stef played on the wing) he caught it nicely and then chucked it at Steve Weekes at full-back.  Just in case Weekesy might gather the ball and clear it, Stef then ran into him and took him out.  Southgate gathered the ball and should have scored but were called back for a forward pass.  I felt so sorry for them that a few minutes later I went on a run and with acres of open space around me, looked desperately around me for someone to pass to and promptly slipped a neat inside pass to their scrum-half who took off and scored their only try.  Not sure they even thanked me properly for that.  John Ronane finished off our scoring when again we showed great hands and support play with the ball going wide to Stef on the wing then back inside for Johnny to score.  Alex Gillespie added three conversions.

That was pretty much the story of the scoring but there were some other memorable sights…  Scouse winding himself when trying to high tackle their second row, Stef sprinting along the touchline like a car being push-started with everyone wondering when the gears would kick in!  The innocent face of John Ronane when their flanker was penalised for pushing him off the ball, wonder why he did that, eh, John? and Terry running out of bounds to stop the clock: oops, wrong game!

Good effort in the first half by everyone, just a shame that we didn’t maintain the focus through the second half but the defence was good throughout with John Ronane and Andy Lee smothering everything in sight.  Big Phil the Bill Harvey made a welcome return to Ealing colours as did Declan "not Cronin" McGrath.  Thanks to the Exiles (Alastair, Alex and Malik) who helped us fill the numbers especially for Southgate.  Here’s to the rest of the season!
