Welcome to the 2011/2012 Season

Dear All

Welcome to the Referee Section for the 2011/2012 Season.

Last season we were delighted to be awarded the RFU President’s Award for the Best Referee Section at a club, which is very prestigious. Pete Paterson and other referees in the Section have worked hard over many seasons to reach this point and the Ealing Referee Section is regarded very highly by other clubs and the RFU for the training that we provide to our club referees, the quality of the refereeing at our club and also for the number of referees we have been able to train and introduce to the London Society of Referees.

Pete Paterson has decided to take a well earned break from running the section this year after a number of seasons. As President he will continue to assist us with his experience and enthusiasm. I am pleased to take over Pete’s role as chairman and hope that I will be able to move the Section forward, although I will have to learn to be as outspoken as Pete!

I am delighted that Marek Kostka will again be appointing referees to the Youth matches, while Man-Chung Tsang (MC) will be working with mini and youth sections to identify new referees and liaising with the RFU to deliver the ELRA training course. MC and Tim Harrison will be organising Fourth Officials for the 1st XV Club games, a very important role for National League 1 matches. Referees, coaches and others from the mini and youth sections will be asked to assist with performance of this role through the season.

Whilst it is rewarding to see referees gaining promotion and moving on to adult rugby, our absolute focus is to ensure that all referees at the Club can deliver the highest quality of refereeing at the level at which they wish to referee.

Working with the RFU, the London Society and the senior referees at the club, we propose to provide two coaching sessions before Christmas and at least one in the New Year, delivering practical refereeing and assistance to referees with issues that arise during the season. Not only do we wish to provide training to new adult referees, we also intend to provide coaching and mentoring to our youth players who have taken the ELRA course so that we capture the young refereeing talent that we will have in the club. More will follow on these sessions.

Several of our committed referees have assisted the senior amateur section of the club by providing their services at the Touch Rugby training sessions run over the summer months. Many thanks in particular to Robin Dann, Neil Ransom, and Michael Schaeffer. Next summer we hope to increase the number of referees taking part and to make this a more formalised service we deliver to the senior club.

Do please keep any eye on the Referee Section Website for updates. We welcome any questions or suggestions for the Section during the season.

Charlie Hodder
Chairman

Chairman’s Pre-Season Update to Members

The last 12 months have been busy ones at the Club, the most obvious achievement was the 1st XV winning the league and securing promotion. This in itself is enough for a Chairman to fill his report with, but there are other things that are just as important and I want to use this note as a means of updating the membership on the progress of the Club as a whole.

Management

Dave " Tom " Thomas retired as youth chair after two years of hard slog, and Jan Hitchcock has taken over, I would like to thank Tom and welcome Jan. The rest of the Committee is as last season, although it is fair to say that the three of us that were new to post a year ago have learned an awful lot in twelve months. Pete Patterson has handed over the Refereeing section to Charlie Hodder, Pete will be a hard act to follow. Russell Price has handed over the reigns of the F&G committee to Ralph Crane, in my opinion Russell’s financial stewardship over the last two seasons has stabilised the Clubs finances and set us on the right road. A full list of officers and NEDs can be viewed on the website.

There are two other important roles that we have created, and which will help is in our drive to deliver the five year plan. Mike Cudmore has taken on the role of General Manager as well as DoR, this is a natural combination of roles and I can already see us reaping the benefits of Mike’s ten years experience at Ealing, and London Irish before that.

The second position we have created is that of a Management Accountant, this role consolidates the book keeping, and accounting roles of Clare Craig and Rob Hunter. Again my personal thanks to Clare and Rob, without their hard work we would not be in the good shape we find ourselves. The new position will manage the Sage Accountancy system and provide the management and the budget holders with monthly updates. We have appointed Val Thompson in this role.

Finances

Talking of money, we now have a two year sponsorship deal with Trailfinders, this is a big step, it gives us a lot more management latitude. Thanks to Mike and Fiona Gooley for their continued generosity as sponsors and supporters, especially in these tough economic times.

We have restructured the finances and management of the Club over the last two seasons, the message has been that we are one Club, and that is very much the case, but we are a Club made up of very different parts and one thing our new Sage accounting system has done is to emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of each section.

As many of you will know from visiting other clubs or hosting them at Vallis Way, there is a common perception that Ealing is a wealthy Club. The truth is that we are lucky to have a generous benefactor who sponsors the Club and provides the superb facilities that we hire.

The sponsorship from Trailfinders largely funds first team rugby, and we all benefit from their success, everything else from rats to evergreens has to be self financed, apart from two charitable donations from the Mike Gooley Charity. However, like most rugby clubs we still need to raise revenue through fundraising and sponsorship. It is important to point out that if you sponsor or fundraise for the club, it is going to the amateur part of the club that you or your kids play for.

Clearly, if we do not raise finance through sponsorship and fundraising the only other income stream is subscriptions. Rob McEvoy left us at the end of last season, and fundraising is now being looked after by Craig Bowley. Craig is now your first call if you have any sponsorship queries, and as members you can expect to be contacted by Craig and the section Chairs next season, as we are on a fundraising drive. Craig can be contacted on: ccdo@ealingrugby.co.uk

Next Season

So what will next season bring? Some things that you will welcome, some that you have come to expect and other new things that will be a little more controversial:

National One Rugby, three London derbies and trips to Newcastle and Jersey among others. There will be no easy games next season, it is a much tougher league, but we are confident that our team will deliver.

Some new faces on the pitch and some old faces no longer with us, in particular I would like to thank Jay King, Paddy Gill, Blair Morris, James Winterbottom and Markus Bircham who have either hung up their boots or moved on.

Trailfinders" investment in Vallis Way continues, the first team pitch has been relaid and leveled and new posts have been installed.

We will be charging members a nominal £5 including the programme to watch first team rugby, rugby of this quality has never been cheaper. (OAP and members under 16 will still be free)

More first team involvement with the Club and the minis and youth players

Subs will rise, a sad fact is that we are in an inflationary cycle, and we need to raise Club income, we have kept the increase to a minimum on the basis that we will be aiming to raise more through fundraising. Online payment is now available.

The success of the Club Dinner and Summer Ball means that we are committed to developing the social side of the Club, and shows that we are blessed with fantastic support.

Our senior amateur section is at the heart of the Club, and it has been restructured to ensure that it thrives. This is an important part of the Club that provides many of the volunteers and coaches that you see on Sundays as well.

The Puma section is now up and running, and is providing an invaluable coaching service to the elite youth as they prepare for Colts and adult rugby.

We have spent a lot of time working with TFSC to improve the facilities we hire from them. One important change that you all need to know about, is that we have decided to split the 10% bar discount between the member and the Club. It means you will now get 5% and the other 5% will be paid back to ETRC. This will help Club revenues, and I really must urge you to use your cards when buying drinks in either bar.

We are updating our disciplinary codes, as a Club we have a pretty good record, but as the biggest Club in Middlesex we will be expected to raise the bar and set the standard.

A new and better web site, it really worked as a communication tool last season, and we want to build on that.

Finally, a thank you to all the volunteer members who turn out every week to those who organize the car parking, the first aiders, coaches, age group managers, those who organise tours, tournaments, social events and everything else that makes the place tick. If you would like to get involved contact your age group manager or a member of the Executive Committtee.

So to wrap up, 2011-12 is going to be a season that builds on the success of the last two, both on the pitch and financially. I believe we now have a management team that is organised, focused and professional, there is no doubt that it is going to be hard work, and the mix of experience and enthusiasm will ensure that the Club can and will deliver the ambitions that we set out last season.

For me this Club is as much about the last 140 years as it is about the next twelve months, we are custodians of a valuable piece of rugby history. I hope you, the members, see it that way too, and I hope that you will all embrace the challenges and support your Executive Committee with enthusiasm and generosity of spirit.

I was very sad to hear the news about Dave. He was the Colts’ manager when I first came to Ealing, running the side Stuart Laird and Bill Kennard. As Seamus says, Dave had a great gift of inspiring loyalty to Ealing and to himself and we had some great times and great tours. From what I hear he was a top notch Scout leader too. My thoughts are with his wife and family.

REPORT: Windsor 3’s/4’s 27- 38 Ealing Exiles

In the death throws of the 2010/2011 season Ealing Exiles beat Windsor in the shadows of Windsor Castle in a fast and brutal game on the parched yet awesome Home Park grounds with a six try haul.

Nick Greenhalgh reports thankfully from the back of the scrum no.8 and not no.2 like last week!

Managed to get a fixture confirmation from the fixtures exchange on Thursday after persuading the Windsor fixtures secretary that the Exiles were actually a fair few notches down the ladder from Ealing 1st team on the rugby ranking board and so would provide a competitive oppo to a mixture of their 3’s and 4’s. I think it was the info about our training being the 1/2 pint of Guinness before the match that swung it. The end result did indeed show we were pretty even to this welcoming Windsor squad.

The game like far too many games of late started fast and seemed to continue that way throughout. The ref kindly limited the first half to 36 mins, but as Windsor seemed to be coming back a bit in the 2nd half seemed to play 40 + minutes in that half, or perhaps that is how it seemed to this aging Exile. We played well from the off, making good use of quick tap and runs from penalties. Windsor were not quick to retreat and we were awarded several extra 10 yards here and there as a result. The first and second Ealing tries came in quick succession. I can’t recall the first and will amend the report when I am reminded. The second was from Alex A tapping and darting from a penalty. They weren’t near 10 and didn’t realise that there was no one minding the camp behind the front men who graciously left him to run his 10. Well he just kept running and dotted it down from not far off the half way line, a few tried to chase him, and I even think he slowed to make them feel they could get a sniff, but his pace was too much.

Shortly after that restart we gave a way a penalty in our half and the oppo had a go at sending in the biggish runners. Much to my relief the runner didn’t try a side step or hand-off and laid his flank perfectly into my shoulder allowing me to lower him to the hard ground with great comfort on my part. Not so for his part as he didn’t seem to want to get up for five minutes. We then regained possession and kept up with our fast breaks. When we had support we were making good ground. Windsor were still not making use of their back line and we got another try, again a quick break a few missed tackles and a grounding of the oval ball. A little before the end of the first half the oppo did show that they could indeed break our defences as the ball made it out to their agile winger who deftly avoided a couple of Exile backs to get them on the score board.

Our scrum started a little weak, but quickly grew in strength and quelled the Windsor front 5. We cycled through 4 props, including the elusive Barry Cousin’s who has been nursing a very saw foot for the last season, and 3 second row today and various of these combinations worked very well. Though I suspect our fitness (surprisingly!) gave us the edge as the game wore on. One thing that did persist throughout the game was their hooker trying every trick in the book and then some to disrupt the put in. The fella did very well and they gained a few against the head. However, so did we, and they also gave away a few free kicks from these endeavors so I think we came out better on that tally.

As the end of our season approaches some of out players were showing they’d started to get to a reasonable level of fitness and this certainly made it’s mark around the park today. Here I’d like to praise Fabio who had the game of his season out on the wing firing where he could to upset the Windsor defence making good ground and often on hand screaming for the ball. Also Jonathan had a cracker, scoring 2 tries! I think this is the first time he’s scored for us. Great breaks! Jonathan show boated a little with his last try much to the Chagrin, and so there was a few puffed chests under the posts for a short while until the ref told everyone to get a life. Paul Havel also got in on the action coming in off his wing to shoot through the oppo centres to score, nice work Paul. Spike at number 10 found himself having to do a fair bit of back row work tackling and wrapped up many of opposition forages into his channel.

The second half saw the Windsor no. 10 take a bit more control and show some good distribution skills. We let a few tackles through and allowed too many gaps in our defences and they started to come back at a pace. Such a pace that we needed keep up the pressure and close the gaps and ideally score some more. We managed just that. In the closing minutes after several attempts by several other including Jareth, myself, Steve Richards and others, finally Dave Mac did what he does best and bludgeoned his way for fine try between the posts.

Exiles had a great day out in Windsor. Big thanks to the chaps from Windsor for hosting this last minute friendly, hope to make this a regular late season fixture. The ref also did a splendid job at letting the game flow very well, almost on a par with our Wayne Barnes experience a few weeks back, if not better. Nice end to the main season. Great to have Barry back on the pitch at last! Now all that is left of the season is to look forward to our Cobh Tour for Barrys 50th Birthday, and the Damian Bugeja Memorial match on the eve of Friday 20th May.

REPORT: Canterbury 12 – 69 Ealing Trailfinders

Canterbury captain Chris Hinkins described the Ealing Trailfinders performance as superb and Canterbury Head Coach Danny Vaughan rated it the best he had seen by a visiting side during the City club’s five years of National League rugby. As stated on the Canterbury web site, despite the heavily weighted scoreline Canterbury, by normal standards, did not play badly. They won a reasonable share of possession and never stopped competing, but when the league leaders had the ball they were on a different plane. In conditions made for Ealing’s fluid style their eye for space, ability to cut delightful angles and relentless support play were rewarded with eleven tries, five scored by England Sevens squad member Phil Chesters.

Ealing Trailfinders played at a tempo and skill level that Canterbury struggled to contain and this reflected in the half time score line with a bonus point in the bag and leading by 29 points. In the second half Ealing Trailfinders carried on where they left off and came out in the second half with even more enthusiasm.

Ealing Trailfinders’ pace men created first half tries for Chesters (2), impressive full back Peter Hodgkinson , Ryan Gregory and Blair Morris and, in the last minute of the half, Matt Evans. There was no let up on the resumption as the visitors continued to win the crowd’s admiration with their adventure and quick wits. Chesters raced in for another three tries and there were touchdowns from Karl Gibson and Jack Fishwick, while Morgan Thompson contributed seven conversions. Ealing were past the 60 mark before a brave Canterbury, laying siege to the visitors line, eventually created a try for Hilton. Good display from all and an important five point away win.
