This Week:

Wednesday 18th March – Midweek training 18:45 to 20:00. Please stay away from pitch 2 (the astroturf pitch) as it is in use for a Men’s cup match.

Sunday 22nd March – Training 09:45 to midday. There is a mini’s tournament being played on the pitches at Trailfinders so training will be in Gunnersbury Park.

Gunnersbury Park, Popes Lane, London W3 8LQ

There is a gate into the park about half way down Lionel Rd. If you approach from this side and make your way out the other side of the trees, you will be able to see us from 09:45.

Sunday saw us play an important role in the HML Div 2 title decider with Harrow aware that a win for them would make them league champions. However, with Ealing fielding a very strong side, we hoped we weren’t going to make it easy for them.

Unfortunately, in the first half, we did just that, allowing them to score 3 tries and making mistakes when we had possession. Some vital coaching points were made clear during the half-time team-talk and Ealing came out of the blocks for the second half with real sense of purpose. After shipping the ball wide, Reon was able to put in a strong run for our first try and Conor converted. Another spell of Ealing pressure culminated in a try for Tuvshen pushing up into the line after the play was switched left. Ealing had to weather the storm for a while, but after some favourable decisions and clearing kicks, we camped down in the Harrow 22 for the last 10 minutes of the game. Despite the pressure from Ealing, a tired (and relieved) Harrow held on to win 19 – 12.

Too many heroic performances to mention all of them but George J. hooked well in the scrum and was nearly perfect for lineout throws, Euan and his lifting team for winning both Ealing and several Harrow lineouts, and Freddie for consistently producing quick clean ball from the breakdown.

There were a few disappointed faces from the players in the clubhouse after the match but not from the coaches or spectators who recognised a genuinely entertaining performance to be proud of. At the end of 70 minutes rugby, there was just one score difference between Ealing and the league champions. In addition we are the only team to have scored two tries against Harrow in the league this season.

Congratulations to nine boys from the U14’s who made their County debut on Sunday 7th March for Middlesex against Surrey at Old Cranleighan’s RFC.

The boys, many who have been at Ealing since rugby rats, began their county careers away at Surrey, and despite coming off second best in a fiercely contested 12-5 game , all acquitted themselves well, and the game really went down to the wire.

The boys involved were:

Seb Eyre , Tom Steene  Cieran Gearty, Lucas Brathwaite, Zane Stewart, Jack Hobbs , Aston Solomon , Luis Gomez- Rose &  Joshua O’Flaherty

Academy Update

Academy Update

February has been a busy month for the Academy with fixtures coming thick and fast for all the age groups from U16 to U23.

Senior Academy

We had the honour of hosting the Combined Services U23 in our 2nd match up against the best young rugby players in the three Armed Services. Good weather and the great surface made a winters day feel like late spring. A huge physical challenge for our Squad with several U17 players making positive impacts on the game, Lewis Ellingham, Josh Steadman and Ben Retter coping well with the step up.

We also faced a return trip to Championship side Bedford Blues Academy at Goldington Road. After such a good performance at Vallis Way with our U19 Squad, we were looking forward to challenging our U20 players against the benchmark development programme outside of the RFU funded Clubs. Unfortunately a misunderstanding meant Bedford could not play the whole game at U20 and came from behind in the last 25 minutes to win another exciting match up.

Our loan players continue to impress at National League level. Academy skipper Sam Lunnon picked up the Man of the Match award for his part in Old Albanians crucial National 1 game against Blaydon. Tom Williams and Matt Killeen have become important members of the starting XV at Civil Service Rugby in National 3S, it’s proving a difficult season for the club but all involved are very happy with the progress of the Young Trailfinders. Matt Killeen also made his debut for a Henley Hawks A team in their win against the Army A at Dry Leas. A solid performance for the National 2 side saw Matt give the try scoring pass in a sweeping move to seal the win.

Our younger Senior Academy players are also doing well with the Men’s section, looking to establish themselves in the senior game. Scrum half Chico U’Chong has become a prolific points scorer in his recent games.

Great news also for the Senior Academy as No8 Marcus Lowe has been invited to London & South East Divisional trials after several impressive performances for Middlesex U20.

More representative honours also came for Chico U’Chong with Portugal U19 and Yun Shun Luk representing Hong Kong U20s.

Junior Academy

The U18 have really worked hard this month, covering those players who have represented the Senior Academy and still turning out winning performances, we are a very ‘young’ U18 with many U17 group players making up the core squad.

The U16 have benefited from the wind down in school rugby commitments and are improving ahead of the business end of the season.

Academy Alumni

Those who follow us on Twitter (@ETFacademy for those that don’t!) will have no doubt noticed that former Academy U18 lock Cian Romaine has made 3 appearances for Ireland U20 in the 6 Nations Tournament, a fantastic achievement considering Cian didn’t even figure in County rugby at U16, he should provide huge inspiration for anyone who has an ambition they are prepared to pull up trees to realise.

Also, news just reaching us is that 2 of Cian’s former Academy U18 team mates Matt Lewis and Will Key have been awarded Rugby League Blues at Oxford University and will line up in the Rugby League Varsity match later this week.

U16 News W/E 08/03/2015

Well done all who played in Sunday’s 29-17 win over Esher. Two well matched teams played out a very close game and Esher threatened to take the honours going into the half-time break with a 12-17 lead. Better distribution in the second half, allowed several Ealing players (notably Matthew and Stuart) to show their speed and put us in good field positions. This week a mention for the players that made the hard-yards and put us in try scoring range rather than the try-scorers (especially as I was looking for a lost ball when one was scored) so well done Euan, Calum, JP, Jobe and Fionn whose strong runs got us down inside the five metre line. Great effort from George and Liam to hold-up what looked like a certain Esher try late in the second half.

This Week:

Wednesday 4th March – Midweek training 18:45 to 20:00.

Sunday 8th March – Away match at Old Merchant Taylors. Meet 09:45 for a 10:45 Kick-off. Please respond to Gerry Poyntz to confirm if you are available. This is a non-selected squad so if you say you are available you will be playing. Meals after so bring number ones please. Let us know if you need a lift to OMT’s ground.

Additional info from OMT’s manager:

The way to get to the clubhouse has changed and the old route has been blocked off so:
  • When you turn into Merchant Taylors’ School grounds you will see lots of fields and several places to park but don’t be tempted by any of them.  Keep driving.
  • You’ll come to a fork in the road, take the right fork (it is sign posted OMT clubhouse but people often don’t see it) and follow this road round the right hand edge of the school past a really big car park.  There are lots of speed bumps.  You will see a lake on the right hand side and building work on the left.
  • Keep going until you get to another junction.  The clubhouse (modern, lots of wood cladding) and car park is straight in front of you ie don’t turn left.  There is plenty of parking.
  • When you go into the clubhouse through the double doors, parents can turn left up the stairs to the bar area where they can purchase coffee, tea, bacon sandwiches etc and sit in the warmth.  This is where the boys post-match food will be (sausage, beans and chips) and the bar will be open.
  • For the changing rooms, go into the clubhouse and turn right.  You will be in the changing room at the end of the corridor on the left.  You can also use the other entrance door at the far end of the corridor which leads you to the pitches.  The water tap is just outside.

U16s News W/E 01/03/15

Well done all who played in the match against Farnham. A hard fought game in poor conditions which grew worse as the game went on. A tight first half saw us go in level at 7-7 after we had taken the lead through Reon’s breakaway try and Calum’s conversion. With the wind at our backs we were able to step up the pressure in the second half and despite losing Dan and Joey through injuries, Gavin, Liam and Tom all got on the scoresheet. Strong scrummaging and an effective kick and chase tactic kept us camped down in Farnham territory for most of the half.  Final score Farnham 12 – 22 Ealing.

This Week –

Wednesday 25th Feb – Midweek training 18:45 to 20:00

Sunday 1st Mar – At home for a friendly against Esher. Meet 09:30 for a 10:30 KO. Meals afterwards so bring number ones please. Please respond to emails from Gerry Poyntz to let us know if you are available. It is a non-selected squad so all will play.

Academy U20 fail to press home advantage against Bedford Blues

Bedford Blues Academy v Ealing Trailfinders Academy lost 24-10

2 severe road accidents and a misunderstanding regarding age groups meant a fractured build up to this weeks fixture at Goldington Road, home of Bedford Blues Academy.

Trailfinders Academy started very well and forced mistakes from the Blues who have taken the scalps of Premiership Academies and Representative side this season. strong carrying from the forwards gave half backs Chico U’Chong and Keano Van Dieman a succession of attacking opportunities, silly mistakes broke up play before a dropped pass lead to a Bedford counter attack and 4 phases later the young Trailfinders were under their posts, harsh lessons to be learned about cherishing possession.

More good play from two evenly matched sides saw penalty chances missed, one successful attempt by U’Chong cut the lead to 5-3. Far too many penalties conceded lead to a team yellow for prop Zaki Chamnaoui and a further yellow for fly half Keano Van Dieman saw Ealing pinned on their own line repealing attack after attack, but brave tackling prevented Bedford extending their lead.

The secong half saw Ealing start powerfully, attacking the Bedford defenders and stretching the field despite being a man down. A well worked 5m attacking line out was driven over, No8 Marcus Lowe got just rewards for another impressive performance, coming up with the try which was skilfully converted by U’Chong. Excellent back line play typified by runs from Matt Killeen and Dylan Van Dieman drew further penalties but points were refused, which may have been regretted in hindsight.

At 50mins Ealing had to withdraw their U20 players and the wholesale changes and position swaps saw the game change. Bedford strength in depth was crucial and their class shone as attack after attack was repelled but inevitably scores came and the game finished with clear water between the sides.

On reflection, a rewarding day for Ealing Trailfinders Academy, we are beginning to find our feet at higher levels, some very young players are being exposed to high quality, high intensity environments. The next target for our young players is aintaining the level of performance they showed next week and beyond.

Congratulations to U17 players Ben Retter, Josh Steadman, Lewis Ellingham, Fergus Connor and Alex Hogg who made his debut, also making their debuts were U18 scrum half Jack Hissey and prop Bilal Baajour.

Next up is London Scottish Academy at The RAA on 28th February, hope to see you there.

U16s News Week Ending 22/02/15 – UPDATED – Farnham game is ON!

UPDATE – Farnham confirmed yesterday that their pitches have recovered and our match against them is on. See you all at Farnham!

==============================================================================

Well done to all who played against London Irish at the weekend. In a make-shift squad hampered by half-term absences,  several of players were asked to play out of position. We led twice in the early part of the game before Irish pulled clear. A spell of Ealing pressure before the end of the first half was unlucky not to end with a score that might have galvanised the team for the second half. As it was, Irish ran in a couple of tries shortly after the restart and Ealing heads dropped. It was one way traffic for a while as the Exiles racked up the tries and added some impressive conversions, but Ealing re-grouped with about 5 minutes to go and broke into Irish territory. Eventually, Ealing pressure was rewarded and we scored with the last play of the game. Ealing tries for Sedi, Akeem and Liam.
