U16 Tour Report

Ealing Academy’s Under 16’s started their mission with a briefing from “Colonel” Miller outside the Centenary Clubhouse. After distributing some essential kit, we boarded the Trailfinders’ minibus and headed to Market Harborough Rugby Club.

The match was a close one with much of the 1st half a stalemate before MH broke free and scored twice to lead 10-0 at half time. Ealing came back strongly in the second half and, despite a further score from Market Harborough, we drew level on tries and won the game by making two conversions. Final score 15-19 to Ealing.

MH had put on a great lunch for us and we thank them for their generosity in hosting us. After an exchange of awards we had to cut short our stay and head on up to Loughborough for the Ealing 1st XV match at the University.

We were all delighted to be a part of the Ealing celebrations that followed our promotion to next season’s Championship, and an 8-31 win was a fitting way to end the season.

After dinner we headed back to Beaumanor Hall and set up camp in the cabin accommodation. Further details of that evening are subject to the Official Secrets Act but suffice to say the troops made a tactical retreat around 10:30. A ceasefire had been agreed for 11pm, but hostilities continued until around 1am, at which time an uneasy truce broke out.

Next morning we rose for breakfast which was followed by the high ropes and zip wire exercise we had scheduled to hone our combat skills.  Having successfully completed our objective, we made the most of the great weather to eat lunch al-fresco before loading the minibus one last time and heading back down the M1.

Here are a few snaps taken at the weekend. Check back later in the week when more photo’s will be added.

On behalf of the whole club it is my pleasure to invite you to this season’s annual Club Dinner which will be held at Vallis Way on Friday 8th May.

Rory UnderwoodThis year the guest speaker is Rory Underwood. Some of the younger players may be unaware that Rory is a legendary ex-England and British and Irish Lions player, being the leading try scorer for England in international matches with 49 tries, plus 85 England caps and six Lions Caps, and he played in the Rugby World Cups during 1987, 1991 and 1995. Men’s Section Manager Ricky Spadavecchia, as a 19 year old, also played against 19 year old Rory, in an Italy A v England U23 fixture in 1982.

Under the professional direction from our twin compères Jeremy Inson and Adrian Hobbs the Club Dinner gives us all a chance to look back and celebrate the successes, and setbacks, of the season, and to give club caps and other awards to the outstanding performers and contributors over the season. It’s also a cracking good night out.

U16s News W/E 12/04/15

Well done all who played in our last league game of the season against Old Albanians B squad. We managed a 21 – 0 win and secured 3rd place in the league in the process. Many of our spectators remarked that it was our best defensive performance of the season as all players made their tackles. Our coaching team were particularly pleased that the players delivered the level of intensity they were looking for right from the kick-off.

Thank you MC who shared these fantastic photos:

Ealing Trailfinders Colts – Graduated Return To Play (GRTP)

Guidelines

Rest is the cornerstone of concussion treatment. This involves resting the body – ‘physical rest’ – and resting the brain – ‘cognitive rest’.

The means avoidance of:

  • Physical activities such as running, cycling, swimming, etc
  • Cognitive activities, such as school work, homework, reading, television, video games, etc

This complete rest should be for a minimum of 24 hours.

Before restarting activity, the player must be symptom free at rest. Medical or approved healthcare provider clearance is recommended before restarting activity.

  • If any symptoms are present or reappear, contact training and playing must be avoided.
  • Rest from playing or contact training is recommended for a minimum of 2 weeks following cessation of symptoms in ALL Academy Players.

A Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) must be completed:

  • for ALL players diagnosed with a concussion.
  • for ALL player even suspected of having concussion during a game or training at which there is no appropriately qualified person present.

A GRTP should only be commenced after the completion of the rest period recommended and only if the player is symptom free and off medication that modifies symptoms of concussion.

Any player with a second concussion within 12 months, a history of multiple concussions, with unusual presentations or prolonged recovery must be assessed and managed by healthcare providers (multi-disciplinary) with experience in sports-related concussions and no further participation in Rugby should take place until the player is cleared by a doctor with experience in concussion management.

Graduated Return To Play

Stage 1 (Minimum Rest Period)

2 weeks complete rest period, measured from 1st symptom free day post injury.

Stage 2 (Light Aerobic Exercise)

10-15 Minutes of light/moderate jogging, swimming or cycling.

Stage 3 (Sport Specific Exercise)

Stage 4 (Non Contact Drills)

Stage 5 (Full Contact Practice)

Normal training activities.

Stage 6 (Return To Play)

Note

I. Players may only progress from states 2-6 if no symptoms are experienced in a full 24hr period post exercise.

Ealing Trailfinders Colts – Concussion Protocol

  • Visual problems
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness/feeling like in a fog/difficulty concentrating
  • “Pressure in head

Pitch side guidelines

Recognise – Learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion above so you understand when a player might have a suspected concussion.

Remove – If an athlete has a concussion or even a suspected concussion he or she must be removed from play immediately.

Refer – Once removed from play, the player should seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Rest – Players must rest from exercise until symptom-free and then start a Graduated Return to Play. The IRB recommends a more conservative return to play for children and adolescents (see Graduated Return To Play Protocol).

Recover – Full recovery from the concussion is required before return to play is authorised. This includes being symptom-free. Rest and specific treatment options are critical for the health of the injured participant.

Return – In order for safe return to play in Rugby, the player must be symptom-free. The athlete must complete the GRTP (Graduated Return To Play Protocol).
