Academy announce local school partnership

Ealing Trailfinders Academy are extremely proud to announce the formation of a Satellite club of Ealing Trailfinders at Elthorne Park School. In this new venture, the Academy will provide expert coaching support for the school in the form of an after school club.

The Academy has worked with the London Borough of Ealing, London Sport and the RFU to secure funding to introduce rugby as an extra curricular sports club in our local community.

Academy Director John Lacey said ” This is a great opportunity to expand the role of the Academy at Ealing Trailfinders into the local community, Elthorne is not a rugby school in the traditional sense but there is a real chance to introduce the game to a new audience especially with the World Cup on our doorstep. It is a great fit for us to be involved, we have coaches with a wealth of experience coaching young players, a desire to widen our talent ID opportunities and hopefully grow the membership at the club. We have had massive support from the London Borough of Ealing, London Sport and the RFU but this would not have been without the efforts of Graham Reed from the club. We are really excited about this development and hope to expand further into the local community, building similar relationships with other local schools.”

Academy player joins up with Pro Squad

Academy U18 scrum half Josh Steadman has topped a great 2014/15 season with an opportunity to train with the Pro Squad for their pre season schedule.

In an exciting development Josh will join up with the newly promoted Championship squad for the summer and throughout the season when his studies allow.

Academy Director John Lacey said “This is a fantastic chance for Josh to accelerate his development, he worked really hard throughout last season, took the huge step up to U23 rugby in his stride and finished with a great performance at the Bedford U19 tournament. His advances should provide inspiration for all our Academy players and illustrate that with hard work and dedication there is a pathway through to potential Pro Rugby at Ealing Trailfinders”.

Further to Josh joining the Pro Squad Academy U18 lock Lewis Ellingham will join up with the Senior Academy for pre season “Lewis is another player who took huge steps last season, playing against U23 players from the Armed Services can be daunting but Lewis was a strong presence in those games and has coped with the physical demands well, we will look to work on his core and position specific technical skills while he is with us”.

Academy U18 Head Coach Dave Samuels said “the promotion of both Josh and Lewis is a massive compliment to the players in the Junior Academy and show we are definitely moving in the right direction with our Development programme”.

Congratulations to both players and best wishes for the coming weeks.

Senior Academy start pre season

Ealing Trailfinders Senior Academy have started their pre season training programme and are working hard towards 2 games in August.

Academy Director John Lacey said “We are really excited by the improvements to the facilities and are confident the additions to the coaching staff will show some real results for the players. With several new faces joining the squad, the quality of the training so far has been a real step up from last season”.

Touch or Touché!

This year’s touch for juniors (under 18) and parents/guardians starts on the 3rd June at 7pm (the club’s rugby playing adult touch is on Tuesday and is run separately). It will be a similar format to last year with a focus on fun and playing.
P1070142This is for general hand skills and fitness and is not a coaching session. Accordingly kids need to be able to independently play and parents are to participate and not stand on the touch line. We need referees as much as players for what will be a relaxed bit of low key (and free) sport over the summer at a leading rugby club on a modern playing surface. Those interested either turn up on the night or email Stuart at touchrugby@ealingrugby.co.uk.

Mike Hill, VP, RIP

I’m sorry to have to tell you that Mike Hill, who I believe was a Vice President of the Club, passed away after a short illness last week at the age of 82 years.  He was a member in the 1950s and 1960s and played in the A team under Doug Barge and others, then left to work in the North, coming down for various social events including the Centenary Dinner in 1971.  Many of his contemporaries  have passed away but I am sure there are members who will recall playing with him apart from myself.  I hate to mention names just in case, but Ray Cusdin, Mike Williams and Willie will surely remember him.
