Ealing Academy U18s Win LV Cup Final – Match Report

U18 LV Cup Final – Cambridge v Ealing Trailfinders

May 1st 2016, 3pm

Venue – Hitchin RFC

U18s Cup final teamv1

So the scene was set for the final and biggest game of the season. Cambridge, having just won the Eastern Counties Colts Cup looked like a team on a mission, Ealing going about their business as usual.

A nervy first ten minutes saw a number of handling errors from both sides but with Cambridge edging the possession and territory with good set piece work and solid work at the break down. Ealing however were looking sharp and dangerous every time they got the ball, they just needed to secure and keep more of it.

The first breakthrough came out of Cambridge pressure deep in the Ealing half. Ealing won the ball from a lineout and Josh Steadman broke up-field. The ball went through the backs hands wide to the left through Callum Jones, Matt Lacour and Nakyle Bennett-Dawkins. A swift break and some excellent work by Matt Lacour saw Nakyle held just short of the line but, Lewis Ellingham pounced to pick and go and place the ball over for the first score with Conor McPartlin adding the extras.

Cambridge 0 – Ealing 7

The game continued in the same vein. Cambridge very strong in set piece and breakdown, Ealing looking quick and sharp when they got possession. A kick placed deep into the Ealing 22 saw Cambridge catch and drive. This would prove to be a powerful weapon Cambridge would use effectively throughout the game. The result was strong work from the Cambridge forwards and they were rewarded with a try.

Cambridge 5 – Ealing 7

Again the pattern continued. Another break from Ealing secured a penalty just about in front of the Cambridge posts. Conor McPartlin placing the ball between them for the 3.

Cambridge 5 Ealing 10

Cambridge still very strong came back. Ealing worked tirelessly in defence but penalties were starting to take their toll. Another kick deep into the Ealing 22 and another well worked try for Cambridge, this time converted.

Cambridge 12 – Ealing 10

Ealing were not to give up. Intelligent out of the hand kicking by Conor McPartlin at 10 gave good field position and with better work at the breakdown meant that Ealing were just starting to play. Then another break out of their half saw a penalty just on the Cambridge 10 metre line. It was late on in the first half and going in at half time a point up would be a blow for Cambridge. Conor McPartlin duly obliged, his kicking looking solid having not missed a chance so far.

Cambridge 12 – Ealing 13

Half time.

The second half got underway with Ealing coming out of the blocks like a Greyhound. An immediate break from Ewan Jones saw good work on the floor and at the ruck. The ball came open to Funbi Osuntoki who continued the charge up-field. Again good work at the ruck and with quick ball the Cambridge defence was not quite in place. Josh Steadman at 9 spotted the gap and raced through it to run half the length of the pitch to touch down, Conor McPartlin with the extra 2.

Cambridge 12 – Ealing 20

Ealing continued to play at a faster tempo with pace all across the pitch and continued to cause Cambridge problems leading to another penalty from Conor.

Cambridge 12 – Ealing 23

At this point Cambridge were rattled. They are however a very good team and good teams keep going. They kept working their game and doing what they do well. Slowly they started pulling the second half around with continued excellent tight work. The catch and drive had become a real problem for Ealing and again through good forward pressure and hard running by the backs they got their reward, a converted try.

Cambridge 19 – Ealing 23

Ealing were now feeling the pressure with about 15 minutes to go and the game truly settled into its pattern. Cambridge continued with their fine set piece, driving maul and breakdown work, Ealing playing fast in the open spaces. It seemed it was now important to score next. Luckily for Ealing it was them. With more intelligent kicking and another fine break with pace saw them go hands from half way out. Ealing won a penalty  5 metres out and chose to run with it. Reon Joseph in support stepped up and with his strength and agility managed to get over the line. Another kick from Conor to add the 2 and secure his 100% record for the match.

Cambridge 19 – Ealing 30.

Cambridge yet again showed their class and determination and came back with more of the same and again to be rewarded with a converted try.

Cambridge 26 – Ealing 30

The last 10 minutes for Ealing seemed like an hour. Cambridge pressed and pressed but the defensive wall that Ealing put up was impenetrable. Cambridge did come very very close a couple of times with Funbi repelling a Cambridge player from the try line back to the 5 metre line and then just a few minutes later Andrew Barton made a try saving tackle wide out and on the line with Josh Steadman following up only to see Cambridge knock on. From the resulting scrum Ealing were able to clear their line. Cambridge countered again with the ball making its way to the other side of the pitch where they tried hard to break the Ealing defence but were tackled into touch. The lineout was the last play of the game and all Ealing had to do was win it and kick to touch. The pressure was at its height. Matt Hodson threw another accurate ball, Ewan Jones went up and with the lineout secured the ball went from Josh Steadman to Conor McPartlin who put the ball into row Z and it was all over.

Final score

Cambridge 26 – Ealing 30

An absolute classic final contested between two very good teams with very different styles. It was just today Ealing came out on top.

Well done to all the players on both sides and best of luck to all the U18 players now moving on.

Academy powers to victory over London Scottish Academy

London Scottish Academy 15 – 48 Ealing Trailfinders Academy

The Academy travelled to the Athletic Ground, Richmond for what was the last game of the Academy programme for some of our players on a damp and windy spring morning determined to deliver a performance to be proud of. The supporters who made the short journey across the Thames were not disappointed.

The early exchanges were very even with Scottish using the wind to pin Ealing in their own half, a great sequence of individual skill from U18 scrum half Josh Steadman broke the deadlock, fielding a high ball inside our half, a mazy run and raw speed saw him over in the corner. This sparked 20mins of some of the best rugby of the season, strong direct running mixed intelligently with well executed passing led by fly half Callum Nolan-Hutchinson resulted with first Rasaan Samms then a quick brace for Josh Hodson.

Not to be outdone London Scottish responded with a try and a penalty kick to bring the game back down to earth, their pack dominated the scrum and led to too many penalties and lost territory.

It was Trailfinders who finished the half on top though with another strong finish and a first half hat trick, from full back Hodson to make the score 10-27 at the break.

The second half continued much as the first despite wholesale changes with the bench exchanging seamlessly with the starters. Replacement fly half Charlie Fatoma led well to steer the team into the right areas. Winger Dyneal Fessal was next on the sheet with a try, followed by centre Chris Hitchcock and finally Joe Batt dotting down, all three converted by the impressive Fatoma.

Scottish showed great character to finish the game with a try from a driving lineout.

A very good performance from all involved and a fitting end to a season that has seen many successes on and off the pitch. Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to growing from the solid foundations now in place.

Young Trailfinders take on London Scottish

The Academy make the short trip to The Athletic Ground, Richmond on Saturday to take on London Scottish Academy in what will be the last Academy game of the season for some of the players.

The Academy coaching team has named an exciting side for the fixture with players from across the full range of the Academy group. U18, Emerging Player Group (EPG) and the Senior Academy are all represented. 16 players in the squad have played Youth rugby at the Club with 14 having come through the EPG, highlighting the important impact that a focus on core skills has had on the development of individual players.

Kick off is at 13:00 at London Scottish and it would be great to see as many of you as possible on the sideline.

Richmond Heavies 29-20 Evergreens

What a fitting fixture to close out the Evergreens first season back in the Surrey Vets League. Our own cup final, a true test of steel and nerve against a well respected Vets team, that always sit in the upper echelons of the table. Winner takes all, 3rd versus 4th. In many parts of the game we matched them pound for pound, ruck for ruck and on another day with a little more composure we could beat them. Alas this time we came up just short of the mark.

Evergreens came out of the blocks fast and mean with a lot of quick clean ball resulting in two early penalties, the second of which skipper Usher elected to let Beck slot over; 3-0 Evergreens and looking good. However, in order to do this we had to over-commit numbers at the rucks and mauls and left ourselves short in the defensive line. Heavies used this to their advantage scoring three unanswered tries, using width intelligently leaving three on ones that even in his prime Tel would not have stopped. However, we regrouped and Cotts scored a morale boosting try after a sniping run from the diminutive Green before halftime to go in 15-8 down. Spirits were high at the halftime break, with clear deficiencies identified to work on.

But Heavies too had their tails up and played to their forward strength well, improving on their set-piece play and gaining more momentum at the scrum as well as working the floor well at the breakdown. A swirling wind confused Stokes, who chose to call “mark” 6 yards outside the 22 when catching a Beck kick that had been pushed back his way by a strong gust, he remained confused later when asked to explains his actions but took his ensuing punishment well at the presentation session. Two tries from them saw the lead stretch to 29-8, but resilience has been the by-word for this evolving Evergreens squad and they dug in to score two more tries, one converted. One of these was a true a backs try, finished by Tel in style in the corner after contributions from Whitney, Green (replacing the injured Hoban whose hamstrings are no longer made for kicking it seems) and the ever strong Jackson, channeling his energies well.

But this was not a loss to dwell on. This was a match played (almost always, cough, splutter) in a style and with a spirit that bodes well for next season. We need to build on this success, get off to a flying start and believe these games can be won because they can be – we should fear no one in this league now. Well done guys, enjoy your summer break but get ready for season #2!

2 more Academy players to train with the Pro Squad

The Academy are extremely proud to announce that 2 more players have been invited to train full time with the Pro squad at the club. U17 winger Reon Joseph and U20 prop Ziana Alexis will join flanker Tyler Bush training full time this week. Marcus Lowe will also return for a further two week period from next week.

On announcing the news Academy Director John Lacey said “This is fantastic news for the players and the wider group within the Academy.
Ziana recently joined us to train while continuing to play with his club at Amersham & Chiltern and has really impressed. Reon has had a really good season linking with the Senior Academy from the U18s, he has a lot to do on his skills but is an exciting prospect with a great work ethic.
Add these two players to Josh Steadman who trained full time in preseason, Tyler Bush who will train full time until the end of the season, Marcus Lowe who has a further two week period with the Pro’s and Josh Hodson who has had his trial with London Welsh extended to the end of the season and we can really see the rewards of the Academy programme.
This is a great opportunity for the players and we’d like to thank Ben and the Pro Squad players and coaches for giving the guys this chance to improve and develop.”

Ealing Trailfinders Academy are always looking for ambitious, committed and hard working young players aged U17 to U23. If you would like to find out more, contact Academy Director John Lacey.

Academy passes 1,500 coaching hours marker

Ealing Trailfinders Academy coaches have this month passed through the 1,500 coaching hours delivered marker for the first time. This illustrates the expansion of roles and wider activities that it now covers.

The Academy is now responsible for The Junior Academy, made up of U16 & U18 age groups, the Emerging Player Group for U15-18 year old potential high achievers, The Senior Academy group with players U19-23 and the Community Schools Programme.

Academy Director, John Lacey said “This is another significant milestone for the Academy programme and is something we and the club are extremely proud of. U13 HML League Winners

u13s last league game a

Our U13s squad all met last Sunday at St Benedicts Sports Ground and scored two fine wins in their final HML league games this season.

Our A team beat Old Albanians 38-14 completing an unbeaten run against all opposition and came clear top of HML league Division 1. Including the qualifications last season our As have now gone 2 years unbeaten in the league competition. A remarkable achievement.

Our B team go from strength to strength and scored their 4th victory in a row, this time against close rivals Old Grammerians winning 66-34 in a thrilling match with 16 tries scored between the two teams. This earned them second place in Division 6 and a promotion next season. A great effort by all but special congratulations go to Jakub H and Theo B who made their first competitive appearances in an Ealing shirt.

For the Division 1 games our seasons campaign included contributions from 25 of our squads players with a number of new entries to the higher level game. The B team have also improved immensely during the season with many new players making excellent progress. Well done to them all.

This is all due to and huge thanks go to the coaching team Neil, Andy, Matt and Sean. Their “one squad” approach to the training sessions has been at the heart of the development of all of the players skills, abilities, confidence and most important their enjoyment of the game.

Evergreens 18 – 15 Harlequins Vets

Friday night and we were under the lights at Vallis Way again. Once again Evergreens managed to sneak home, this time against a committed Quins vets team whose never say die attitude had them within a whisker of a win. Ealing started strongly with early pressure leading to a penalty just inside the Quins half. Both opposition and referee were surprised when returning captain Jake Usher elected to let Damien Connolly kick for the posts, but Carter-esque he slotted it between the posts for a 3 point lead. Soon after he thundered after a kick and surprised the subsequently heavily admonished Quins winger by pouncing on the ball for a great individual try. Quins battled hard, scrummaged really effectively and kicked out of hand well once they got into their stride but once again the Evergreens kicking game worked well with Justin Green sending a long flat punt, which was touched down into the dead-ball area via the flailing hands of a Quins back that led to a home team 5 yard scrum. A blindside drive from Terry Thompson with quickly recycled ball allowed Eddie Beck to add to his impressive season’s try haul (if only his converting were as prolific); 13-0 halftime.

Evergreens v Harlequins

Quins came out of the blocks hard in the second half and executed a clear game plan to play the dog and rhino ball well resulting in an early (unconverted) try that was immediately matched by another from Beck carrying the ball well in the final quarter of the pitch. Relentless continued forward pressure from Quins and some crafty kicking from their 10 led to another score mid-way through the second half. However, rotating the bench using Carlin, Ronan and others from his wheelchair and crutches on the sideline BOF was able to keep the Evergreens fresh and resilient to further forward onslaughts until the final minute of the game when Quins scored another unconverted try. They will rue their conversion misses and slow start but the Evergreens were celebrating a fine victory against a quality side and rising to the dizzy heights of the upper third of the Surrey Vets League table. One more match to go and it’s our own cup final against Richmond Heavies on Saturday 9th April – bring it on!
